Experiential learning is especially effective and powerful in an outdoor setting. Getting people out of their routine atmosphere facilitates their openness to new learnings and is the first step in "showing up". Although our programs are usually outdoors, they can be done entirely indoors as well.
No they dont. Anyone can do these activities because our programs are not about doing the activities. Thats not the primary focus. The activities are utilized as instructional tools.
This is a very common concern. There are two important aspects of your question. Many times the real concern behind this is that people dont want to look bad in front of their peers. We are aware of this. How we deal with it is to establish a non-competitive atmosphere before we do activities which could be viewed as competitive. We then set the tone so competition naturally doesnt occur. It is replaced with team spirit, cooperation and mutual support.
The second aspect is that we approach these activities with a philosophy that declares that its never about the activity directly. The activities act as metaphors. They have no inherent properties. While the conceptual points behind this are difficult to apply, the experience of this is naturally and easily established. So we do not allow inter team competition to undermine the bonding, the spontaneous support that emerges among team member.
